Acrylic Portraits in Painting Challenge

Critique 3 Acrylic Portraits in Painting Challenge!

I critique three artists’ paintings from the acrylic portrait painting challenge.

In this video, I show what is working well aesthetically, and what could use improvement. I also show the artists how to make those improvements. These critiques are what I normally do for my Realistic Acrylic All-Access Members all the time. It helps them “get unstuck,” figure out the next steps in their portrait and take it to a higher level of realism. This way, artists can feel confident and paint a portrait they can be proud of!

Remove & Tone Highlights in your Acrylic

How to Tone an Acrylic Portrait & Wipe Away for Highlights

In this video, I’ll show you how I toned (or added a ground too) the entire canvas for my acrylic portrait of Daniel praying.

After covering everything with an umber glaze, I then wipe off certain areas, exposing the white of the canvas in areas of the picture where there would naturally be highlights. This creates an immediate distinction between light and dark values, that you can then build upon. It’s not easy to do with the glazing technique, but I’ll show you how, and hopefully, this is one technique you can add to your “toolbox” as you paint portraits!

Watch this video to learn more about how to tone an acrylic portrait & wipe away for highlights.

How to Add Glaze to Your Acrylic Painting

How to Add Secondary Glaze to Your Acrylic Painting

In this portrait of Daniel praying, I’ll show you how I continued on past the initial raw umber dark glaze that separated the light from shadow.

I am adding ultramarine blue and alizarine crimson glazes to establish the darker values. You can use this method to make your paintings more realistic!

How to add Semi-Opaque Highlights

How to add Semi-Opaque Highlights to your Acrylic Portrait

I’ll show you how to add highlights using the glazing technique.

In this video tutorial, I will show you how I added some highlights to finish off a portrait, using the glazing technique on top of a quick 30-minute study.

I started the painting freehand, without a pencil sketch, just blocking in the paint quickly (for a change of pace) added some glazes, and then finished off with semi-opaque highlights. I’ll show you how a few brushstrokes can make a big difference in your painting.

To learn more about how to add semi-opaque highlights see the video below!
