2 Techniques to Paint Realistic Hair in Acrylic Portrait

What techniques do you use to paint hair that looks realistic?

Painting realistic-looking hair in your acrylic portrait doesn’t need to be hard.

Let me show you two techniques that you can use to paint hair that looks almost like you can touch it.

1. Paint specific value shapes within a larger area.

2. Paint specific value shapes within a smaller area.

Repeat these two techniques several times, until you build up a convincing illusion of hair. Watch the video to find out how you can do it, too! This is the eighth video in our series of oval acrylic portraits. I’m painting in the acrylic glazing technique, so it has been taking some time to build up the richness of color and depth. You can learn how to do this too!
