How to Package a BIG painting for Shipping Safely

Have you ever shipped a painting? A big painting? 

It can be stressful to know if it’s going to make it to its destination safely. And the cost–yikes!

I’d like to show you how I shipped a BIG 30″ x 40″ painting to a client, shipping to New York, from Wisconsin. How can you save money by making your packing less spacious and heavy. And most of all, protect your painting so it gets there safely. 

THE SANDWICH: 

-Painting

-Shrink wrap

-Thin foam core board—all sides

-1/8″ Hardboard (painted side)

-Cardboard (opposite side)

-1″ or 3/4″ EPS foam board—both sides

-Cardboard outer box, tight around all sides

FINAL Package WEIGHT: 18 lbs

DISCLAIMER: I cannot be held responsible for damages incurred while using this method in shipping. It is just what has worked well for me. Also, purchasing insurance is advisable any time you ship an expensive painting. 

The client wanted the painting to stay on the stretcher bars. Alternatively, you can ship a painting by removing it from the stretcher bars, rolling it up, and enclosing in a tube. Watch my video here for how to do that here
