I completed my first portrait painting in 2021, (Birthday Girl) with the support and assistance of the Realistic Acrylic Portrait School and the mentorship program with Matt Philleo.
Without formal instruction in visual art, my artistic abilities were raw and unrefined. I lacked confidence. Painting anything seemed an elusive skill. I had no experience or knowledge on how to build a painting from an initial sketch to a finished product. I feared engaging others or seeking feedback.
Working with Matt has helped me to integrate my drawing skills with an approach to painting that leverages the principles of classical painting techniques. The result is a beautiful glow that comes from within the painting which brings the subject to life. I did not think it was possible to achieve this with acrylic paint. Today, all of my paintings, regardless of subject, employ the techniques I have learned within the Realistic Acrylic Portrait School.
Over the past two years I have learned so much about how to prepare, draw, paint, and evaluate a portrait painting. For me, most importantly, through the school I engage artists from around the world in a collaborative, supportive and safe environment to improve not only my own skill, but contribute to the progress and development of my colleagues. The school has produced a truly amazing international body of work and collaboration in portrait painting.
