Clare began drawing portraits as a teenager in school, doing pencil sketches of any classmate who would sit for her. A career in art seemed to be the obvious progression, but persuaded by her parents that science was a better bet, she went on to take a degree in chemistry.
However, the creative bug never left her, and while working as a broadcast journalist in the west of England, she produced a fanzine for her husband’s rock band which featured a cartoon super-heroine.
The art tailed off until early 2021 when she was asked to paint a portrait of a friend’s late father. The reference photo was monochrome, grainy and poorly-lit, and she had no idea how to start. Discovering Matt and the Realistic Acrylic Portraits group helped to set her on the right path. Then, when an image of her daughter Jess was chosen for the Fall portrait challenge that same year, she signed up for All Access membership to take advantage of the bonus lessons.
Matt’s skill and teaching methods, she says, are exceptional. With his help and that of the support group, she has gone on to paint many more portraits — mostly for fun, but occasionally as commissions.
